Flying Diamonds Shawl - Free Pattern
Flying Diamonds Shawl
by Christi @ xtporter
Size J / 6.00 mm hook and worsted weight yarn
I used one full skein of Red Heart Super Saver in Buff for the sample pattern, and a small amount of the same in Black for the border (1 skein will suffice) If you use only one color for the entire shawl, you will want to get the equivalent of two skeins of Red Heart Super Saver to have enough yarn.
The pattern is easy to learn and repetitive; you need only recall that there is a regular increase. You'll see it as you work through the pattern. I still wrote out the entire pattern, but you can make it larger or smaller by simply working more or fewer rows. The end result is a lovely swath of diamond shapes.
Start with Magic Loop
Row 1: ch 5 (counts as 1st dc, ch 2), dc in loop, ch 3, dc in loop, ch 2, dc in loop, pull loop snug, turn
Row 2: ch 5, dc in next ch 2 sp, ch 2, (dc, ch 3, dc) in next ch 3 sp, ch 2, dc in next ch 2 sp, ch 2, dc in 3rd ch of ch 5, turn
Row 3: ch 5, dc in next ch 2 sp, ch 2, (dc, ch 2, dc) in next ch 2 sp, ch 2, (dc, ch 3, dc) in next ch 3 sp, ch 2, (dc, ch 2, dc) in next ch 2 sp, ch 2, dc in next ch 2 sp, ch 2, dc in 3rd chof ch 5, turn
Row 4: ch 3, (3 dc shell in next dc, ch 2) 4 times, ch 3, (3 dc shell in next dc, ch 2) 4 times, dc in 3rd ch of ch 5, turn
Row 5: ch 6, sk first dc, (3dc cl in next 3 dc, ch 3) 4 times, (dc, ch 3, dc) in ch 3 sp, ch 3, (3 dc cl in next 3 dc, ch 3) 4 times, dc in top of ch 3, turn
Row 6: ch 3, (3dc shell in center ch of ch 3, ch 2) 5 times, 3 dc shel in next dc, ch 2, (dc, ch 3, dc) in ch 3 sp, ch 2, 3 dc shell in dc, (ch 2, 3 dc shell in center ch of ch 3) 5 times, dc in 3rd ch of ch 6
Row 7: ch 6, sk first dc, (3dc cl in next 3 dc, ch 3) 6 times, (dc, ch 3, dc) in ch 3 sp, (ch 3, 3 dc cl in next 3 dc) 6 times, ch 3, dc in top of ch 3, turn
Row 8: ch 3, (3 dc shell in center ch of ch 3, ch 2) 7 times, 3 dc shell in next dc, ch 2, (dc, ch 3, dc) in ch 3 sp, ch 2, 3 dc shell in next dc, (ch 2, 3 dc shell in center ch of ch 3) 7 times, dc in 3rd ch of ch 6, turn
Row 9: ch 6, sk first dc, (3dc cl in next 3 dc, ch 3) 8 times, (dc, ch 3, dc) in ch 3 sp, (ch 3, 3dc cl in next 3 dc) 8 times, ch 3, dc in top of ch 3, turn
Row 10: ch 3, (3dc shell in center ch of ch 3, ch 2) 9 times, 3 dc shell in next dc, ch 2, (dc, ch 3, dc) in next ch 3 sp, ch 2, shell in next dc, (ch 2, 3dc shell in center ch of ch 3) 9 times, dc in 3rd ch of ch 6, turn
Row 11: ch 6, sk first dc, (3dc cl in next 3 dc, ch 3) 10 times, (dc, ch 3, dc) in ch 3 sp, (ch 3, 3dc cl in next 3 dc) 10 times, ch 3, dc in top of ch 3, turn
Work the last two rows as many times as desired to desired size for shawl. In my sample, I worked 31 rows, then did the border on Row 32. Below, I've written the pattern out accordingly. You'll notice the pattern of increases is consistent. ;)
Row 12: ch 3, (3dc shell in center ch of ch 3, ch 2) 11 times, 3 dc shell in next dc, ch 2, (dc, ch 3, dc) in next ch 3 sp, ch 2, shell in next dc, (ch 2, 3dc shell in center ch of ch 3)11 times, dc in 3rd ch of ch 6, turn
Row 13: ch 6, sk first dc, (3dc cl in next 3 dc, ch 3) 12 times, (dc, ch 3, dc) in ch 3 sp, (ch 3, 3dc cl in next 3 dc) 12 times, ch 3, dc in top of ch 3, turn

Row 27: ch 6, sk first dc, (3dc cl in next 3 dc, ch 3) 26 times, (dc, ch 3, dc) in ch 3 sp, (ch 3, 3dc cl in next 3 dc) 26 times, ch 3, dc in top of ch 3, turn

For the border I suggest a contrasting color for extra impact. This is optional, of course, but if you do want to do a new color then fasten off at end of Row 31.
Row 32: Suggested row to do Border - ch 5, 4 tr in ch 3 sp, *ch 2, tr in top of 3 dc cl, picot, ch 2, 4 tr in next ch 3 sp*, rep * to * across, ch 1, tr in 3rd ch of prior row's ch 6, ch 1
Do not fasten off yet - instead, turn shawl so that your next st will be across the top of the shawl. Now we work the trim for the top: sc evenly across. In my sample I did 4 sc in the first sp, 3 sc in each space across, and 4 sc in the last space for a total of 194 sc across the top of shawl, 97 sc on each side of center.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
