Chapter 4
by Christi
I was at the Whole Foods, because I needed some bananas. I was in the line. Guess who walks in! Yes! It was he, Senor Hierba de Trigo. "Fancy meeting you here," said he.
"Yes. I was out of bananas."
Apparently, he had to pick up some organic water. "See you tomorrow," he said, and with that he was on his way and I was on mine. Little did I know that events were about to take a crazy turn.
Next day, I waited to see him before work. I had some questions about micro greens. But he was, seemingly, running late. The weather that day was muggy, humid, and compressive. Thunder rumbled in the distant sky. The day commenced in the conference room as usual. Our trainer stood before us.
Again, the thunder outside boomed its impending disapproval and the walls rattled in kind, making the markers on the white board shake. The lights flickered.
We all sat in silence. It was impossible to comprehend the news that was to be inflicted upon us. Silence seemed to linger in the air like a heavy lingering thing.
"Good people," began our trainer, and I could sense it, because Sr. Hierba de Trigo's seat remained so occupyingly empty. "It is with a heavy heart that I tell you that Senor Hierba de Trigo will no longer be joining us."
Twas as a stake through my soul! Then, the faces of our colleagues... such shock and recalcitrance...
"What?"
"Why?"
"What happened?"
"Que lastima!"
I, myself, was speechless.
Lightning forked across the sky, hit a tree, felled the tree, and subsequent thunder vibrated the ground such that a sinkhole swallowed the tree, which was never seen or heard from again.
But I knew that the adventure was just beginning. Was it adventure? Or just the beans I had for dinner the night before? Nah! Twas an adventure in the offing!
Stay tuned...for Chapter 5.
